A week of careers at Aureus

This week is National Careers Week and students across the school have been taking part in a number of engaging activities focusing on careers. Here is a summary of the week:

The Year 7’s had a week of careers INSERT lessons that immersed them into careers based on each curriculum subject. For example in Biology they looked at Marine Biologists and Immunologist’s.

In normal times, our Year 8 students would take part in a live Human Library, where representatives would come in and talk about their company and role and students would rotate throughout the session to talk to each of them. This year, however, we had to do this differently so they had the opportunity to do a virtual event using pre recorded videos. This related to a UCAS ‘Buzz Quiz’ they took that gave them an insight into what jobs could be good for them based on their answers to the quiz. The students found this very interesting and insightful.

Year 10 had a series of apprenticeships talks following on from the work they did during National Apprenticeship Week. They were also invited to watch the BBC series ‘The Nine to Five’ with Stacey Dooly that looks at work experience.

To end the week, our Year 9 students were given the opportunity to take part in our “Take Your Child to Work Day”. With many parents and carers still working at home, this gave students the opportunity to learn what they do. We were thrilled that some students were also invited into some work settings such as working in the agricultural or horticultural industry. The Year 9’s also had a lesson using the ‘Careerometer’ where they got to compare jobs in terms of salary and working hours.

Miss Saul, Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development was delighted with how the week transpired, “We have had such a high level of engagement with Careers this week. The students have worked hard and found the content accessible. We will continue to use curriculum lessons to embed careers into our curriculum”.

National Careers Week is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity to help support young people prior to leaving education. At Aureus we use a lot of careers information from external agencies to build our monthly Careers Bulletin that can be found as a link on the Parents and Carers bulletin so keep an eye out for that. Each month it includes work experience opportunities, current open day events and links to apprenticeships available in Oxfordshire.
