Designing Wind Turbines
On Friday, the 17th of March, we were fortunate to experience being able to build wind turbine machines out of LEGO as an effort to encourage some of us to consider engineering as a possible career choice.
The hands-on experience with the machinery made learning the science behind the turbines more engaging. One of the things we realised when we built our wind turbines via a guide was that when we had a large cog connected to the motor, turning the blades of the turbine via a smaller cog, the blades turned faster than when the engine had a small cog, and the blades had a larger cog. We learned that this happened because one rotation of the large cog was equivalent to several cycles of the smaller cog. This experience was exciting and has personally sparked an interest in engineering for me. Hopefully, we will learn more about engineering and get another opportunity to build working mechanisms out of LEGO.
