Supporting Safer Internet Day

Tuesday 9th February was Safer Internet Day and this year was the slogan "Together for a better internet". This year in the UK, Safer Internet Day explores reliability online. The internet has an amazing range of information and opportunities online, but how do we separate fact from fiction?

Students watched an assembly at the start of the day about how to spot fake news; whether on adverts, websites or from social media influencers. They learned some top tips and steps to take in order to stay safe online.

In computing lessons, students were able to discuss different scenarios and how to identify the reliability of online information. They were also encouraged to make pledges on how they plan to stay safe online and to help others do the same.

“We engaged in some productive discussions about information we have received or seen published on the internet. The students were able to spot fake news and discuss steps they would take to establish the reliability of what they see online. It was really interesting to hear year 10 students discuss their views on social media influencers too”, said Mrs Strange, Head of Computing.

Safer Internet Day is a landmark event in the online safety calendar. From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.
